Town of Spencer recently issued the following announcement.
Families in the Town of Spencer are invited to celebrate community and the holidays in a safe way, at the Spencer Hometown Holiday Drive-In on Saturday, December 12. Local partners are planning an event that will comply with COVID-19 pandemic health and safety guidance.
Local leaders have been working to enhance community event and recreation offerings for residents of Spencer. Key partners in this include the Town of Spencer, Spencer Hometown Holidays nonprofit, N.C. Museum of Dolls, Toys & Miniatures, and N. C. Transportation Museum. According to Alderman Sam Morgan, who is chair of the Spencer Hometown Holidays planning committee, the biggest obstacle to accomplishing this is the COVID-19 pandemic.
"How do we safely bring people together to enjoy events that are traditionally associated with large crowds," asks Morgan. "We have to start somewhere, so we are hosting a special Christmas event in the old Park Plaza parking lot on December 12."
Attendees are invited to arrive beginning at 6:30 p.m. and enjoy holiday music; order drive-in/call-in dinner from partners Belly's Soul Food Diner, Pinocchio's of Spencer, and Roger Dogs; and hear live music from One Fret Over, a group of young bluegrass musicians. The evening culminates with illuminating a variety of lighted decorations and a Christmas tree at 8:00 p.m.
The Park Plaza is located across Salisbury Avenue from the N.C. Transportation Museum, between Fourth and Fifth Streets. All attendees will remain in their vehicles throughout the event and hear the show via FM transmitter. Signage encouraging practicing the 3 Ws (Wear, Wait, and Wash), social distancing, and other protocols will be in place.
Spencer is known for hosting thousands of visitors each holiday season at the N.C. Transportation Museum for THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride, which was cancelled for 2020. The museum is hosting a drive-thru holiday light experience as an alternative this year. This first ever museum offering will allow visitors to enjoy this historic site, illuminated by thousands of holiday lights, all from the comfort of their car. Families can plan to enjoy both events for a safe experience and memories for years to come.
"We fully realize that these are uncertain times," said Morgan. "However, be assured that there are a lot of enthusiastic people in our community, who not only believe in improving the perception of our town, but also share a common bond of hope for better times yet to come – for all of us."
The Spencer Hometown Holidays non-profit organization is accepting donations and sponsorships to help fund this event, as well as volunteer assistance. To discuss sponsorship or volunteer opportunities, please call Debbie Barnhardt at 704-213-1201, or email Sam Morgan at samiam262@carolina.rr.com.
