The CDC has visited The Citadel and three other facilities in North Carolina to determine why they have had large COVID-19 outbreaks.
In July, the congregant care facility on Julian had 168 confirmed coronavirus cases among residents and staff, WBTV 3 reported on Sept. 9. There were 21 deaths from the virus. The Citadel is operated by Accordius, a nursing home management company in Charlotte.
Rowan County Public Health Director Nina Oliver confirmed that a CDC “strike force” had been sent to investigate.
“We are looking at several aspects of what occurred and what did not occur at the facility,” Oliver said, WBTV reported.
Oliver said that the other CDC strike forces visited three additional North Carolina nursing homes with similar large outbreaks, WBTV reported. Oliver described the visits as “learning sessions” rather than punitive or regulatory.
The findings from the four visits will be compiled in a report that will be sent to all the health departments across the state, Oliver said, WBTV reported. The idea is to prevent future outbreaks.
