Rowan County announced on May 5 that it will hold a public meeting regarding the proposed expansion of the landfill at 789 Campbell Rd in Woodleaf, North Carolina. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 20 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Woodleaf Fire Department, located at 3500 NC 801 Hwy.

The county said the meeting is open for community members to drop in and speak with staff about the project. Materials and a video presentation will be available on Rowan County’s website for those unable to attend.

According to Rowan County officials, the proposed expansion would remain within current property boundaries and aims to double landfill capacity while improving environmental protections for groundwater. A site study is being prepared for submission to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality later this year.

Residents seeking more information are encouraged to contact the Rowan County Environmental Management Department or visit www.rowancountync.gov/EM. Those needing translation services or Americans with Disabilities Act accommodations can contact Kelly Natoli, Assistant County Manager, before the meeting date.

Recent data show educational trends in Rowan County school districts: Of senior students taking portions of the ACT exam during the 2022-23 school year, between about seven percent and twenty-three percent were considered ready for college across math, science, and reading sections; similar results were observed among junior students according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

The upcoming public meeting offers an opportunity for residents to learn more about local infrastructure projects as well as ongoing efforts by county officials.
