Food Lion Feeds has launched its annual Summers Without Hunger campaign, an initiative aimed at addressing childhood hunger by providing meals to children and families during the summer months. Since 2019, the program has delivered over 97 million meals.
The campaign targets food insecurity that many children face when school cafeterias close for the summer. According to Feeding America, one in five children in the United States experiences hunger during this period. Food Lion Feeds collaborates with customers and suppliers to improve access to nutritious food.
Customers can contribute by purchasing specially designed grocery bags for $2 either in-store or online via Food Lion To Go. The campaign runs from June 18 to July 15 and supports grants through the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation across a ten-state area. Founded in 2014, Food Lion Feeds aims to combat food insecurity in communities served by Food Lion.
Ten suppliers will match proceeds from bag purchases up to $1 million, effectively doubling their impact. Each bag purchased provides approximately 40 meals. Customers may also donate directly at checkout by rounding up their purchase total or contributing a specific amount.
In addition to customer contributions, Food Lion associates will volunteer with local feeding agencies throughout the campaign’s duration.
Kevin Durkee, Manager of Food Lion Feeds, expressed gratitude for the support received: “We are grateful for the generous support of our customers and partners in our efforts to reduce food insecurity among children this summer.”
Since its inception, Food Lion Feeds has donated more than 1.5 billion meals and is committed to donating three billion meals by 2032.
