FOIA Request to Rowan County regarding vendor payment register on February 1, 2026.
On February 1, 2026, Rowan News submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Rowan County, North Carolina. The request seeks access to the county’s vendor payment register for the preceding calendar month. This request was made under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. ยง132-1., and is intended to be received in electronic format if available.
The requested records include detailed information about transactions conducted by the county. Specifically, Rowan News is seeking the names of vendors paid by the county, the dates and amounts of these payments, and descriptions of the goods or services purchased. The purpose of this request is to gather information that holds public interest and to disseminate it to the public.
Rowan News has emphasized that this request does not require the creation of new documents but only pertains to records that currently exist. In case any part of this request is denied or withheld, they have asked for a specific statutory basis for such denial and requested that all reasonably segregable portions of the records be released.
As a media organization committed to transparency and accountability in government affairs, Rowan News has also requested a fee waiver based on their role in gathering and reporting news. They are affiliated with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization dedicated to investigating governmental agencies through Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws.
Of 1,228 senior students taking the science portion of the ACT in Rowan County school districts, 151 (12.3%) were considered ready for college in the 2022-23 school year.
